ASTM D1062
Cleavage Test Fixture for Metal-to-Metal Adhesive Bonds

Universal Grip ASTM D1062 cleavage test fixture with clevises and hardened pins for metal-to-metal adhesive bonds
ASTM D1062 Fracture Test Fixture – Universal Grip Data Sheet (PDF)

ASTM D1062 measures the cleavage strength of adhesive bonds between metal adherends. Cleavage loads one edge of a bond so it opens progressively, a mode that is especially severe for adhesives and common in real joints. Universal Grip supplies a clevis-type cleavage fixture that pins the bonded block specimen and pulls it open on a universal testing machine.

What ASTM D1062 Measures

The test reports cleavage strength, the force to break the bond expressed per unit of bond width. A bonded block specimen is loaded in tension at one end, concentrating stress at the leading edge of the bond line rather than spreading it across the whole area. Recommended adherends include brass, copper, aluminum, steel and phosphor bronze, and the method can compare adhesives on other metals with any specified surface treatment. Results support adhesive selection, surface preparation studies and process control.

How the ASTM D1062 Test Works

  • Bond two metal blocks with the adhesive following the manufacturer's procedure and the D1062 geometry.

  • Condition the bonded specimens as specified.

  • Pin one end of the specimen to the pair of clevises with the hardened loading pins.

  • Pull at the specified rate so the clevises open the bond from the loaded edge.

  • Record the maximum force, calculate cleavage strength and note the failure mode.

Specimens and Setup

  • Prepare adherend surfaces consistently; cleavage results are very sensitive to surface treatment.

  • Control bond line thickness and remove squeeze-out so the loaded edge is well defined.

  • Check pin holes for burrs that could bind in the clevises.

  • Keep the load in the plane of the specimen to avoid twisting the bond.

  • Confirm specimen dimensions and test rate against your copy of the current standard.

ASTM D1062 FAQ

What is cleavage loading?

In cleavage, force is applied at one edge of a rigid bonded joint so the bond opens progressively from that edge. Stress concentrates at the leading edge, which is why cleavage is one of the most severe ways to load an adhesive.

How is cleavage different from peel?

Both concentrate stress at a line, but in cleavage both adherends are rigid, so the bond opens like a hinge. In peel tests, such as ASTM D1876, at least one adherend is flexible and bends as it separates.

Which metals can be tested?

D1062 recommends brass, copper, aluminum, steel and phosphor bronze, and allows other metals with any specified surface treatment for comparison.

How are results reported?

Cleavage strength is reported as force per unit width of bond. Labs also record the failure mode, adhesive or cohesive, which helps judge surface preparation.

Is D1062 still current?

Yes. ASTM lists D1062-08 (reapproved 2023) as the active edition. Always work from the current edition when setting up specimens.
