ASTM D1335
Tuft Bind Fixture for Pile Yarn Floor Coverings

Universal Grip ASTM D1335 tuft bind fixture with hold-down plate and hook for pulling a single carpet tuft
ASTM D1335 Tensile Fixture – Universal Grip Data Sheet (PDF)

ASTM D1335 measures tuft bind, the force needed to pull a single tuft or loop out of a pile yarn floor covering. Carpet mills, backing and latex suppliers and specifiers use it to check how well tufts are anchored. Universal Grip supplies a tuft bind fixture with a specimen hold-down plate and a fine hook or clamp for a universal testing machine.

What ASTM D1335 Measures

The test reports the force required to remove a tuft (cut pile) or a loop (loop pile) from the carpet backing. It applies to tufted, woven and other pile constructions. Tuft bind shows how well the backing and adhesive lock the yarn in place, and it helps predict resistance to pulled tufts, snags and pilling-out in service. Several pulls are made across the specimen and averaged.

How the ASTM D1335 Test Works

  • Cut a carpet specimen and condition it as specified.

  • Clamp the specimen flat under the hold-down plate with the pile facing the opening.

  • Engage a single tuft or loop with the fine hook or clamp.

  • Pull perpendicular to the backing at the specified rate until the tuft or loop comes free.

  • Record the peak force, reposition, and repeat for the required number of pulls.

Specimens and Setup

  • Use a hook for loop pile and a clamp or appropriate hook for cut pile; specify pile type when ordering.

  • Engage only one tuft or loop, and both legs of a loop where the standard requires it.

  • Space pulls across the specimen so earlier pulls do not affect later ones.

  • Keep the specimen flat and fully clamped so the backing does not lift during the pull.

  • Confirm the number of pulls, rate and reporting rules against your copy of the current standard.

Universal Grip ASTM D1335 Fixture

  • Hold-down plate clamps the carpet specimen flat

  • Fine hook or clamp engages a single tuft or loop

  • Pull axis aligned perpendicular to the backing

  • Quick specimen repositioning for multiple pulls

  • 500 N standard capacity; higher capacities on request

  • Steel with corrosion-resistant finish; clevis pin or threaded adapter for electromechanical frames

Applications

  • Tufted carpet production QC

  • Loop and cut pile constructions

  • Backing and latex adhesive evaluation

  • Carpet tile testing

ASTM D1335 FAQ

What does tuft bind tell me?

It shows how firmly tufts or loops are anchored in the backing. Low tuft bind can mean poor latex penetration or backing problems, and it often shows up in service as pulled tufts, snags and sprouting.

Does the fixture work for both cut and loop pile?

Yes. D1335 covers both. Loop pile is usually pulled with a hook and cut pile with a hook or fine clamp. Tell us your pile type so we supply the right attachment.

What machine do I need?

Tuft bind forces are low, so the standard fixture is rated at 500 N and works on an electromechanical universal testing machine or a motorized tensile tester with a suitable load cell.

Can I test carpet tiles?

Yes. Carpet tiles are a common application. The hold-down plate keeps the specimen flat while individual tufts or loops are pulled.

How many pulls are needed?

D1335 calls for several pulls per specimen, averaged for the result. Check the current edition of the standard for the exact number and reporting rules.
