ASTM D5748
Stretch Film Puncture Test Fixture

Universal Grip ASTM D5748 stretch film puncture fixture with ring clamp and toggle clamps
ASTM D5748 Puncture Fixture – Universal Grip Data Sheet (PDF)

ASTM D5748 measures how well stretch wrap film resists being pushed through by a rounded probe, simulating the corners and protrusions on a palletized load. Film producers, converters and packaging engineers use it to compare formulations and gauges. Universal Grip supplies a ready-to-use D5748 puncture fixture for electromechanical universal testing machines.

What ASTM D5748 Measures

The test quantifies a stretch film's resistance to protrusion puncture under a single, standardized low test speed. A taut film specimen is deformed biaxially by a probe until it ruptures, which reflects how film behaves when stretched over sharp edges on a wrapped load. Results typically include maximum force, force at break, penetration distance and energy to break. Together they show both how strong the film is and how much it can stretch and absorb before failing.

How the ASTM D5748 Test Works

  • Condition film specimens as the standard specifies before testing.

  • Clamp the film in the ring holder so it is taut, flat and wrinkle-free.

  • Mount the probe in the load cell, centered over the clamp opening.

  • Drive the probe into the film at the standard low rate until puncture.

  • Record the force-penetration curve and calculate maximum force, force at break, penetration distance and energy to break.

  • Repeat on the required number of specimens and report averages.

Specimens and Setup

  • Cut film specimens large enough to fully cover the ring clamp with margin for gripping.

  • Avoid creases, gels and edge damage in the test area; these cause early puncture.

  • Note film gauge and machine direction for each specimen.

  • Check that the film does not slip in the clamp during loading; slippage inflates penetration distance.

  • Refer to the current edition of ASTM D5748 for exact specimen size, probe geometry and test speed.

ASTM D5748 FAQ

How is ASTM D5748 different from ASTM F1306?

Both push a probe through clamped film, but D5748 is written for stretch wrap film and simulates protrusions on a palletized load, while F1306 is a general slow-rate penetration method for flexible barrier films and laminates. The probe geometry and test conditions differ, so results should not be compared directly.

What results does a D5748 test report?

The method reports maximum force, force at break, penetration distance and energy to break. Energy is calculated from the area under the force-penetration curve, so your test software needs to capture displacement accurately from the start of contact.

What load cell do I need?

Stretch films puncture at relatively low forces, so a low-capacity load cell gives better resolution. The fixture is rated 500 N as standard. Choose a load cell where the expected peak force falls well within its accurate range; we can recommend one when you quote.

Why does my film slip in the clamp?

Stretch films are thin and often have a cling layer, so uneven clamping or a contaminated clamp face can let the film creep inward. That inflates penetration distance and energy. Keep clamp faces clean, tension the film evenly and inspect for movement after each test.

Can the fixture fit my existing test machine?

Yes. The fixture is supplied with a clevis pin or threaded adapter to match your electromechanical universal testing machine. Tell us your frame make and connection type when you request a quote.
