ASTM F606
Fastener Test Fixture for Proof Load and Wedge Tension

ASTM F606 Test Fixture – Universal Grip Data Sheet (PDF)
ASTM F606/F606M covers test methods for the mechanical properties of threaded fasteners, washers, direct tension indicators and rivets. Its proof load, wedge tension and axial tension tests confirm that bolts and nuts meet their product specifications. Universal Grip supplies a fastener test fixture with hardened threaded adapters and interchangeable wedge washers for these tension tests.
What ASTM F606 Measures
F606 tests full-size products wherever possible. Proof load checks that a bolt can carry a specified load without permanent stretch. Axial tension finds ultimate tensile strength. Wedge tension adds an angled washer under the head, so the bolt fails under combined tension and bending; this shows whether the head-to-shank fillet has enough ductility. Nut proof load uses a hardened mandrel to check thread strength. Hardness and other tests in the standard need different equipment.
How the ASTM F606 Test Works
-
Thread the bolt into a hardened adapter matched to its thread series and pitch.
-
For wedge tension, place the specified wedge washer under the bolt head.
-
Mount the assembly in the test machine through clevis pin or threaded adapters.
-
Apply proof load and check for permanent elongation, or load to failure for tensile and wedge tests.
-
Record loads and fracture location and compare them with the fastener product specification.
Specimens and Setup
-
Test full-size products wherever the fastener size and machine capacity allow.
-
Engage the required number of threads in the adapter so the threads do not strip first.
-
Use the wedge angle required for the fastener size and grade by your copy of the standard and product specification.
-
Check that adapters and wedges are harder than the fastener being tested.
-
Size the fixture and test frame to the strongest bolt you plan to test.

ASTM F606 FAQ
What is a wedge tension test?
A wedge washer under the bolt head tilts the bearing surface, so the bolt is loaded in tension plus bending. Passing the test shows the head-to-shank junction has enough ductility and is not prone to brittle head breaks.
What is the difference between proof load and tensile strength?
Proof load is a specified load the fastener must carry without permanent elongation. Tensile strength is the maximum load the fastener reaches before it breaks. F606 covers both, and product specifications set the required values.
Can the fixture test nuts?
Yes. Nut proof load mandrels are available. The nut is threaded onto a hardened mandrel and loaded to check that its threads carry the proof load without stripping.
What capacity do I need?
Capacity depends on bolt diameter and grade. The fixture is sized to the fastener, 300 kN typical, with higher capacities available. Send your largest size and grade and we will match the fixture and frame.
Does the fixture cover every test in F606?
No. It covers tension-type tests: proof load, wedge and axial tension, plus nut proof load with mandrels. Hardness and some washer and DTI tests in the standard need other equipment.
