What fits inside 1,200 kN (269,771 lbf)
The 1,200 kN Quasar adds headroom over the 1,000 kN model for high-strength concrete, the largest common rebar sizes and heavy bolts. Typical peak loads, worked out from strength × cross-section:
-
6 × 12 in concrete cylinder, ASTM C39, at 60 MPa (8,700 psi): about 1,094 kN.
-
#14 (43 mm) Grade 60 rebar at 700 MPa actual tensile: about 1,016 kN.
-
M42 grade 8.8 bolt (1,120 mm² stress area) at 830 MPa: about 930 kN.
-
Steel plate specimen (50 × 20 mm) at 900 MPa: about 900 kN.
-
Type 2 mechanical splice on a #11 Grade 60 bar, which must reach the bar's 620 MPa specified tensile strength: about 624 kN.
Frame and working space
The 1,200 kN frame has 1.1 m of stroke, up to 200 mm/min and 412 mm (16.2 in) of column clearance. The wide test area takes large hydraulic grips for 40 mm and bigger bars as well as concrete platens and a safety enclosure.
Grips and fixtures for this size
Typical 1,200 kN setups use hydraulic wedge grips with rebar and flat faces, compression platens with a spherical seat, heavy bolt grips and bend fixtures for rebar and weld coupons.
1,200 kN or 2,000 kN?
Choose 1,200 kN for concrete up to about 60 MPa and bars up to #14. Move to 2,000 kN for #18 rebar, ultra-high-strength concrete or large structural bolts. Our buyer's guide explains how to size capacity.
Planning for high-strength concrete
High-performance and precast mixes can reach 60 MPa (8,700 psi) or more, which pushes a 6 × 12 in cylinder past 1,000 kN. Capping or grinding the ends flat matters even more at these loads, as uneven ends lower the result. The 1,200 kN frame gives headroom so the strongest cylinders still break well inside the load cell's calibrated range.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the 1,000 kN and 1,200 kN Quasar?
They share the same 412 mm frame, 1.1 m stroke and 200 mm/min top speed. The 1,200 kN gives 20% more force for high-strength concrete and #14 rebar.
Can the 1,200 kN machine test #18 rebar?
No. A #18 (57 mm) Grade 60 bar needs about 1,800 kN, so it requires the 2,000 kN frame.
What is 1,200 kN in pounds?
1,200 kN equals 269,771 lbf, or about 135 short tons.
Why choose 1,200 kN over 1,000 kN for concrete?
High-strength cylinders above about 50 MPa (7,250 psi) can exceed 1,000 kN. The 1,200 kN frame keeps those tests inside its rated range.
