ASTM D1822
Tensile-Impact Specimen Cutting Die for Plastics

ASTM D1822 Specimen Cutter – Universal Grip Data Sheet (PDF)
ASTM D1822 measures the energy needed to break plastics and electrical insulating materials under high-speed tensile loading. It suits materials too thin or flexible for conventional pendulum impact tests, and it depends on small dog-bone specimens with defined S-type and L-type geometries. Universal Grip supplies hardened cutting dies that produce those specimens cleanly and consistently.
What ASTM D1822 Measures
In D1822, a pendulum strikes a crosshead attached to one end of a small dog-bone specimen and ruptures it in tension. The energy absorbed is the tensile-impact energy to break. Because the specimens are short and the loading is fast, small differences in specimen width or nicks along the edges can change results noticeably. A precise, sharp die keeps specimen dimensions consistent so impact energy reflects the material, not the preparation.
How the ASTM D1822 Test Works
-
Select an S-type or L-type die as your copy of the standard or material specification requires.
-
Place the sheet or film on a cutting pad in an arbor, hydraulic or pneumatic press.
-
Cut the specimen in a single stroke and remove it without bending.
-
Inspect the edges for nicks or burrs and measure width and thickness.
-
Test the specimens in a D1822 tensile-impact tester.
Specimens and Setup
-
The die suits sheet and film up to approximately 4 mm thick; confirm for your material.
-
Cut specimens in the direction your test plan requires; molded and extruded sheet can be anisotropic.
-
Discard specimens with visible nicks, since edge flaws start premature breaks.
-
Use a fresh area of the cutting pad so the die cuts fully through.
-
Confirm specimen type and dimensions against the current edition of ASTM D1822.

ASTM D1822 FAQ
What is the difference between S-type and L-type specimens?
They are two dog-bone geometries defined in D1822. The standard and your material specification determine which to use, and results from the two types are not directly interchangeable. Specify the type when ordering the die.
Does Universal Grip supply the tensile-impact tester?
This product is the specimen cutting die. It prepares specimens for D1822 testing on a tensile-impact pendulum tester. Contact us if you need help with other parts of your setup.
What thickness can the die cut?
The die is designed for sheet and film up to approximately 4 mm. Confirm with us for your material, especially for tough or filled plastics.
Why use a die instead of machining specimens?
Die cutting is fast and repeatable for thin sheet and film. A sharp, precision-ground edge gives clean, burr-free sides, which matters because edge flaws start premature breaks in such small specimens.
What press do I need?
The die works in arbor, hydraulic or pneumatic clicker presses. Ejector, handle and press-mount versions are available to suit how you cut.
