What fits inside 10 kN (2,248 lbf)
The 10 kN Quasar is the most common size for mixed plastics, adhesive and packaging labs. Typical peak loads, worked out from strength × cross-section:
-
30% glass-filled nylon, ASTM D638 Type I (13 × 3.2 mm) at 180 MPa: about 7.5 kN.
-
Adhesive lap shear, ASTM D1002 (25.4 × 12.7 mm bond) at 20 MPa: about 6.5 kN.
-
Aluminum sheet, 12.5 × 1 mm at 300 MPa: about 3.8 kN.
-
Corrugated board edge crush and box components: usually under 5 kN.
-
Seal strength, T-peel and 180° peel: tens to hundreds of newtons.
Built for labs that test a bit of everything
Because 10 kN covers both filled plastics and thin metals, it suits contract labs, universities and QC departments that see a wide range of samples. Interchangeable load cells keep resolution high when you drop down to peel and film tests on the same frame.
Grips and fixtures for this size
Common setups are wedge grips for plastics and sheet metal, pneumatic grips for film and textiles, a lap-shear setup with offset spacers for D1002, a 90° peel fixture, and a three-point bend fixture for D790. Add a video extensometer for non-contact strain on soft or fragile specimens.
10 kN or 25 kN?
The 10 kN keeps the 175 mm frame and gives better low-force resolution. Move to 25 kN when you test structural adhesives above about 30 MPa, aluminum or steel sheet thicker than 2 mm, or composite coupons. See our buyer's guide for the full sizing method.
Keeping one frame busy across departments
A 10 kN frame often serves plastics, packaging and adhesive testing in the same week. Save each method in the software with its own grips, speed and report template, label grips by test, and keep a lower-capacity load cell on the shelf for peel and seal tests. That way one machine can replace two or three single-purpose testers without losing accuracy at the low end.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 10 kN Quasar a single- or dual-column machine?
It is a dual-column benchtop frame with 175 mm (6.9 in) of column clearance, the same frame as the 5 kN model.
Can a 10 kN machine run ASTM D1002 lap shear tests?
Yes for most adhesives. A standard 25.4 × 12.7 mm bond fails at about 6.5 kN at 20 MPa. Aerospace epoxies above about 30 MPa can exceed 10 kN, so a 25 kN frame is the safer choice for them.
Which software runs the 10 kN machine?
Galdabini's own test software. Machines can ship pre-programmed with the ASTM and ISO methods you need, and new methods are set up with a test wizard.
Can one 10 kN machine replace a separate peel tester?
In most labs, yes. With a suitable load cell and a 90°, 180° or T-peel fixture, the 10 kN frame runs peel and seal-strength tests alongside tensile, compression and bend work.
