Precision cutting die for ASTM E8 Type 3 subsize Tensile Specimen specimens

This Universal Grip die cuts the subsize Tensile Specimen (tensile specimen) defined in ASTM E8/E8M: Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials. ASTM E8/E8M covers room-temperature tension testing of metals to determine strength and ductility. The subsize flat specimen with a 25 mm gauge is used when material is too small or thin for the standard sheet-type specimen.

We make it in two styles so the die suits the material you cut. The one-piece hardened steel die is machined from a single piece of steel and holds its edge on rigid & semi-rigid plastics, filled compounds, rubber, sheet & film from 0 to 5 mm thick. The ribbon steel (steel-rule) die uses a precision-bent hardened rule in a laser-cut plywood base with a foam ejection pad, an economical choice for rubber, elastomers, TPE, foams, soft plastics & films up to 3 mm. Both cut the same ASTM E8 Type 3 profile.

ASTM E8 Type 3 specimen dimensions

The die is cut to the nominal profile in ASTM E8/E8M: overall length (min) 100 mm, width of reduced section 6.0 ± 0.1 mm, length of reduced section (min) 32 mm, gauge length 25.0 ± 0.1 mm, width of grip section 10 mm, fillet radius (min) 6 mm and thickness ≤6 mm. Always check your current edition of the standard for tolerances and the test procedure.

Where it is used

Typical uses for ASTM E8 Type 3 specimens include thin sheet & foil stock, small-part sampling, weld & coupon testing and medical & electronic metal strip.

Cutting specimens with the die

Put the die on an arbor press or a pneumatic press, set your sheet on a nylon cutting plate and press through in one stroke; the ejector pushes the specimen out ready to test. No press yet? An adapter lets the die run on your universal testing machine. Send us a sample of your material and we will make test cuts free of charge, so you can confirm the edge quality before you order. Hardened dies can be re-sharpened with our die sharpening tool.

ASTM E8 Type 3 Cutting Die FAQ

What is the ASTM E8/E8M test used for?

ASTM E8/E8M covers room-temperature tension testing of metals to determine strength and ductility. The subsize flat specimen with a 25 mm gauge is used when material is too small or thin for the standard sheet-type specimen.

What are the ASTM E8 Type 3 specimen dimensions?

The die cuts the nominal ASTM E8/E8M profile: overall length (min) 100 mm, width of reduced section 6.0 ± 0.1 mm, length of reduced section (min) 32 mm, gauge length 25.0 ± 0.1 mm, width of grip section 10 mm, fillet radius (min) 6 mm and thickness ≤6 mm. These values come from the standard; check your current edition for tolerances.

Hardened steel or ribbon steel: which ASTM E8 Type 3 die should I choose?

For metal foil, thin sheet and strip, choose the hardened steel die; the ribbon steel die is meant for soft materials such as rubber and film. For thicker aluminium or steel sheet, see our punch presses.

Which press do I need for the ASTM E8 Type 3 die?

The die fits manual, pneumatic and hydraulic sample-cutting presses. On our arbor press it mounts with a lateral screw, and an adapter lets it run on a universal testing machine. Tell us your press make and model and we will match the mounting.

How do I grip and measure ASTM E8 Type 3 specimens?

Hold the wide ends in wedge grips so the specimen is loaded straight along its axis. The gauge length is 25.0 ± 0.1 mm; our marking tool applies repeatable gauge marks for video extensometers.

Which other ASTM E8 dies do you make?

We also make cutting dies for Type 2, each in hardened and ribbon steel.

Can you make test cuts on my material?

Yes. Send us a sample of your sheet and we will make test cuts free of charge, so you can see the edge quality and confirm the right die style before you order.

Can you make a custom or multi-cavity ASTM E8 Type 3 die?

Yes. We make custom profiles, multi-cavity dies and nick or notch features on request. Send the drawing or standard, your material and thickness, and your press model.

Need help configuring a cutting die?

Tell us your material, test standard and specimen size. We will recommend the frame, force sensor, grips and fixtures, and send a quote.
