Compact pneumatic grip for films, fabrics and seam testing

The UGC-PG-070 is a small, light pneumatic grip for low-force tensile work on films, fabrics, sewn seams, paper and labels, fine wires and small components. A 20 mm pneumatic piston clamps with 1 kN (225 lbf) at 7 bar (102 psi), which holds about 0.5 kN (112 lbf) of tensile load at a friction coefficient of 0.5. Where specimens need more, the 30 mm piston version doubles both numbers to 2 kN clamping and roughly 1 kN tensile. At 0.26 kg (0.57 lb) per grip, or 0.4 kg for the 2 kN version, it keeps mass on the load cell to a minimum.

How it works

Air supplied through an M5 internal thread pushes the piston and closes the jaw with a force set by the supply pressure. Raising the pressure to 15 bar (218 psi) lifts clamping to 2 kN on the standard version, or 4 kN (899 lbf) on the 30 mm piston version. The anodized aluminum body couples to the frame through a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin, with other couplings on request. Pair it with foot pedals or micro hand switches from our pneumatic grip accessories to keep both hands on the specimen.

Jaws and versions

  • 10 x 25 mm: blank, rubber, pyramid, diamond, or line-contact with R5 or R6.35 radius; opening 0–10 mm

  • 10 x 50 to 10 x 100 mm: blank, rubber, pyramid or diamond for wider strips; opening 0–4 to 0–8 mm depending on size

  • 25 x 25 mm: blank, rubber, pyramid, wave and diamond, plus V-jaws for 2–8 mm round specimens

  • 25 x 50 mm: blank, rubber, pyramid, wave or diamond

A line-contact jaw set pairs two radiused jaws with two rubber jaws, so the specimen is pinched along a single line against a compliant face. Grips are supplied without jaws.

Seam and fabric testing

The line-contact jaws are a common reason textile labs choose this grip: they are used for sewn-seam strength tests to ASTM D1683, where a narrow, defined clamping line is wanted. The 10 mm high jaws also suit narrow film strips of the kind tested to ASTM D882. More fabric setups are on our textiles page.

Machine fit

With tensile ratings of about 0.5 kN and 1 kN, the grip matches Mark-10 F-series motorized testers such as the 300 lbF tensile tester, or a 2.5 kN Galdabini benchtop testing machine. Send us your specimen type and width, the coupling on your frame and your air pressure, and we will specify the piston size and jaw set. Request a quote.

Pneumatic Grip 1 kN Clamping FAQ

What is the tensile capacity of the UGC-PG-070?

About 0.5 kN (112 lbf) for the 20 mm piston version and about 1 kN (225 lbf) for the 30 mm piston version, both at a friction coefficient of 0.5 and 7 bar.

Which jaws are used for ASTM D1683 seam tests?

The 10 x 25 mm line-contact jaws with an R5 or R6.35 radius; each set pairs two line-contact jaws with two rubber counter jaws. See our ASTM D1683 guide.

Should I choose the 1 kN or 2 kN clamping version?

The 1 kN version is the lightest at 0.26 kg and suits films, paper and labels. The 2 kN version with a 30 mm piston weighs 0.4 kg and is for specimens that need a firmer hold.

What is the jaw opening for each jaw size?

0–10 mm with 10 x 25 mm jaws; wider jaw sizes open 0–4 to 0–8 mm.

What air connection and coupling does it use?

An M5 internal thread for air and a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin. Other couplings are available on request.

Are jaws included?

No. The grips ship without jaws, so you choose the size and surface for your specimens.
