A fast, compact 1 MPx video extensometer for metals and small specimens
The UGC-VE-2101 is a non-contact optical (video) extensometer from the X-Sight 2000 Series, supplied, configured and supported by Universal Grip. It tracks gauge marks on the specimen with one 1 MPx camera and reports strain, total length, delta length and angle in real time, so it can stay on the specimen through break with no knife edges to slip or damage. Class 0.5 measuring length of 80 mm suits standard dog-bone and strip specimens.
Measuring length, accuracy class and sampling rate
Per ISO 9513 the UGC-VE-2101 measures 80 mm at Class 0.5, 160 mm at Class 1 and 320 mm at Class 2. Class 0.5 is the tight class labs choose for modulus and proof-strength work; ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture.
Typical sampling is 200 Hz (170 Hz with the full image), and narrowing the view width raises it to 1 kHz. That makes it the right choice when test speed or strain rate is high.
As a rough sizing check: with a 50 mm (2 in) metals gauge length, the Class 2 measuring length of 320 mm lets the gauge marks be followed to about 540% elongation before they leave the calibrated field, assuming the marks start near the centre of the view. We confirm the real limit from your specimen, grips and expected elongation.
What the UGC-VE-2101 is best for
short-gauge metals tests to ASTM E8/E8M and ISO 6892-1
wire, fasteners and small machined coupons
cyclic, high-strain-rate and short-duration tests where sample rate matters more than field size
compression and shear tests on small specimens
Why a single 200 mm housing
The camera, C-mount lens, 200 mm blue LED (465 nm) and USB light relay are built into one 221 × 187 × 80 mm housing that weighs 1.4 kg. Bolt it to the test frame with two M6 screws on a 165 mm span or put it on a tripod using the 1/4"-20 thread. When your specimens grow, add camera units: the same hardware is the building block of the 2200 and 2300 configurations.
Choosing the lens and working distance
Measuring length, lens focal length and working distance are linked: choose two and the third follows. For the Class 0.5 field of view (80 mm high by 64 mm wide) the working distances are 12 mm lens 127 mm, 16 mm lens 169 mm, 25 mm lens 297 mm, 35 mm lens 455 mm, 50 mm lens 685 mm (from the front cover). Longer working distances reduce LED intensity and can need longer shutter times, so tell us your frame and chamber geometry and we will pick the lens.
Connects to your testing machine
Strain is streamed live to the test-machine controller over DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP or RS232, as an analog signal through auxiliary D/A converters, or as an encoder-style quadrature pulse. The JSON and MRT APIs let your test software start and stop measurement, switch methods and set the gauge length. That is how we retrofit video extensometers to Instron, MTS, ZwickRoell, Shimadzu, Test Resources, ADMET and Galdabini frames; see retrofitting a video extensometer to an existing machine.

UGC-VE-2101 1 MPx Single-Camera Video Extensometer FAQ
What gauge length and field of view does the UGC-VE-2101 cover?
Per ISO 9513, Class 0.5: 80 mm; Class 1: 160 mm; Class 2: 320 mm. The exact field depends on the lens and working distance, which we pick from your specimen and frame.
Which ISO 9513 class do I need?
ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture. Many labs use Class 0.5 for modulus. Plastics methods such as ISO 527 set their own accuracy requirements.
How fast does the UGC-VE-2101 sample?
200 Hz typical, 170 Hz with the full image, and up to 1 kHz with a narrowed view width. Data streams to the test machine controller in real time.
Will the UGC-VE-2101 work with my existing testing machine?
Yes, in most cases. It outputs DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP, RS232, analog via D/A converters or a quadrature pulse, and the JSON/MRT APIs allow remote start/stop and gauge-length setting. Tell us the make and model of your frame and controller. See retrofitting a video extensometer.
Can I add cameras to the UGC-VE-2101 later?
Yes. The 2000 Series is stackable: adding units moves you to the 2200 dual-camera or 2300 triple-camera configuration with a joined field of view.
What software comes with the UGC-VE-2101?
The axial (AX) module with Point, Line and Extreme Line probes, on a perpetual license stored on a USB key, with one year of updates and technical support. Optional modules add transverse strain (r-value, Poisson's ratio), torsion, crack opening, rebar, DIC mapping and post-processing.
How do I mark specimens for a video extensometer?
Use high-contrast dots or lines at the gauge length. Our marking tools and the sample marking guide cover the common methods.
How do I get a quote for the UGC-VE-2101?
Send your material, test standard, specimen size and gauge length, expected elongation, and your testing machine make/model. Use the Request a Quote button, call 978-882-1480, or download the video extensometer inquiry form.
