Two 5 MPx cameras in a single 400 mm housing: one box to mount and cable

The UGC-VE-4105-D is a non-contact optical (video) extensometer from the X-Sight 4000-D Series, supplied, configured and supported by Universal Grip. It tracks gauge marks on the specimen with two 5 MPx cameras in one housing and reports strain, total length, delta length and angle in real time, so it can stay on the specimen through break with no knife edges to slip or damage. Two cameras share one housing and one 400 mm LED, joined with a calibration grid for long or highly elongating specimens — with a single box to mount and cable.

Measuring length, accuracy class and sampling rate

Per ISO 9513 the UGC-VE-4105-D measures 2 × 130 mm at Class 0.5, 520 mm at Class 1 and 830* mm (* additional light may be needed) at Class 2. Class 0.5 is the tight class labs choose for modulus and proof-strength work; ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture.

Typical sampling is 175 Hz (75 Hz with the full image), and narrowing the view width raises it to 1 kHz. Higher pixel counts trade frame rate for field of view: at this resolution the camera favours a balance of field size and speed.

As a rough sizing check: with an 80 mm ISO 6892-1 A80 gauge length, the Class 2 measuring length of 830 mm (extra lighting may be needed at this length) lets the gauge marks be followed to about 940% elongation before they leave the calibrated field, assuming the marks start near the centre of the view. We confirm the real limit from your specimen, grips and expected elongation.

What the UGC-VE-4105-D is best for

  • metals to ISO 6892-1 and ASTM E8/E8M when elongation runs past a single field

  • rubber and elastomers to ASTM D412

  • textiles and webbing to ASTM D5034

  • r-value and Poisson's ratio on long sheet specimens with the TR module

Two cameras, one housing

The UGC-VE-4105-D puts two cameras and one 400 mm LED in a single 424 mm housing. The cameras sit up to 310 mm apart and are joined with a calibration grid for a longer field of view, but there is only one box to mount, align and cable. That keeps setup fast on frames where space beside the load string is tight.

Choosing the lens and working distance

Measuring length, lens focal length and working distance are linked: choose two and the third follows. For the Class 0.5 field of view (2 × 130 mm high by 109 mm wide) the working distances are 12 mm lens 156 mm, 16 mm lens 213 mm, 25 mm lens 357 mm, 35 mm lens 520 mm, 50 mm lens 710 mm (from the front cover). Longer working distances reduce LED intensity and can need longer shutter times, so tell us your frame and chamber geometry and we will pick the lens.

Connects to your testing machine

Strain is streamed live to the test-machine controller over DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP or RS232, as an analog signal through auxiliary D/A converters, or as an encoder-style quadrature pulse. The JSON and MRT APIs let your test software start and stop measurement, switch methods and set the gauge length. That is how we retrofit video extensometers to Instron, MTS, ZwickRoell, Shimadzu, Test Resources, ADMET and Galdabini frames; see retrofitting a video extensometer to an existing machine.

UGC-VE-4105-D 5 MPx Dual-Camera Video Extensometer FAQ

What gauge length and field of view does the UGC-VE-4105-D cover?

Per ISO 9513, Class 0.5: 2 × 130 mm; Class 1: 520 mm; Class 2: 830* mm (* additional light may be needed). The exact field depends on the lens and working distance, which we pick from your specimen and frame.

Which ISO 9513 class do I need?

ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture. Many labs use Class 0.5 for modulus. Plastics methods such as ISO 527 set their own accuracy requirements.

How fast does the UGC-VE-4105-D sample?

175 Hz typical, 75 Hz with the full image, and up to 1 kHz with a narrowed view width. Data streams to the test machine controller in real time.

Will the UGC-VE-4105-D work with my existing testing machine?

Yes, in most cases. It outputs DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP, RS232, analog via D/A converters or a quadrature pulse, and the JSON/MRT APIs allow remote start/stop and gauge-length setting. Tell us the make and model of your frame and controller. See retrofitting a video extensometer.

What does the -D in UGC-VE-4105-D mean?

Two cameras in one 400 mm housing. The cameras sit up to 310 mm apart and are joined with a calibration grid, giving a longer field of view with only one unit to mount and cable.

What software comes with the UGC-VE-4105-D?

The axial (AX) module with Point, Line and Extreme Line probes, on a perpetual license stored on a USB key, with one year of updates and technical support. Optional modules add transverse strain (r-value, Poisson's ratio), torsion, crack opening, rebar, DIC mapping and post-processing.

How do I mark specimens for a video extensometer?

Use high-contrast dots or lines at the gauge length. Our marking tools and the sample marking guide cover the common methods.
