Two 400 mm 9 MPx units stacked into one continuous field of view

The UGC-VE-4209 is a non-contact optical (video) extensometer from the X-Sight 4000 Series, supplied, configured and supported by Universal Grip. It tracks gauge marks on the specimen with two 9 MPx cameras and reports strain, total length, delta length and angle in real time, so it can stay on the specimen through break with no knife edges to slip or damage. Two 4000 Series units with a joined calibration grid nearly double the measuring length, for very long or highly elongating specimens such as elastomers, films and wire.

Measuring length, accuracy class and sampling rate

Per ISO 9513 the UGC-VE-4209 measures 2 × 220 mm at Class 0.5, 820 mm at Class 1 and 1680 mm at Class 2. Class 0.5 is the tight class labs choose for modulus and proof-strength work; ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture.

Typical sampling is 75 Hz (32 Hz with the full image), and narrowing the view width raises it to 1 kHz. Higher pixel counts trade frame rate for field of view: at this resolution the camera favours reach and resolution over raw speed.

As a sizing check: the Class 2 measuring length of 1680 mm is long enough to follow a gauge section of about 1.7 m, to measure several gauge lengths on one long specimen, or to watch more than one specimen at once. We confirm the usable field from your specimen, grips and expected elongation.

What the UGC-VE-4209 is best for

Two 400 mm units for very long fields of view

Two 4000 Series units, each with its own 400 mm LED, are stacked and joined with one calibration grid into a continuous field of view. Each unit weighs 2.5 kg. Use it when a single camera cannot cover the full elongation, for example on rubber, film, wire and long cables.

Choosing the lens and working distance

Measuring length, lens focal length and working distance are linked: choose two and the third follows. For the Class 0.5 field of view (2 × 220 mm high by 116 mm wide) the working distances are 12 mm lens 169 mm, 16 mm lens 233 mm, 25 mm lens 378 mm, 35 mm lens 519 mm, 50 mm lens 720 mm (from the front cover). Longer working distances reduce LED intensity and can need longer shutter times, so tell us your frame and chamber geometry and we will pick the lens.

Connects to your testing machine

Strain is streamed live to the test-machine controller over DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP or RS232, as an analog signal through auxiliary D/A converters, or as an encoder-style quadrature pulse. The JSON and MRT APIs let your test software start and stop measurement, switch methods and set the gauge length. That is how we retrofit video extensometers to Instron, MTS, ZwickRoell, Shimadzu, Test Resources, ADMET and Galdabini frames; see retrofitting a video extensometer to an existing machine.

UGC-VE-4209 9 MPx Two-Unit Video Extensometer FAQ

What gauge length and field of view does the UGC-VE-4209 cover?

Per ISO 9513, Class 0.5: 2 × 220 mm; Class 1: 820 mm; Class 2: 1680 mm. The exact field depends on the lens and working distance, which we pick from your specimen and frame.

Which ISO 9513 class do I need?

ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture. Many labs use Class 0.5 for modulus. Plastics methods such as ISO 527 set their own accuracy requirements.

How fast does the UGC-VE-4209 sample?

75 Hz typical, 32 Hz with the full image, and up to 1 kHz with a narrowed view width. Data streams to the test machine controller in real time.

Will the UGC-VE-4209 work with my existing testing machine?

Yes, in most cases. It outputs DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP, RS232, analog via D/A converters or a quadrature pulse, and the JSON/MRT APIs allow remote start/stop and gauge-length setting. Tell us the make and model of your frame and controller. See retrofitting a video extensometer.

How is the UGC-VE-4209 different from the UGC-VE-4109-D?

The UGC-VE-4209 uses two complete 400 mm units, each with its own LED, stacked and joined into one field of view. The -D version puts two cameras in a single housing. Two units reach further; one housing is quicker to mount.

What software comes with the UGC-VE-4209?

The axial (AX) module with Point, Line and Extreme Line probes, on a perpetual license stored on a USB key, with one year of updates and technical support. Optional modules add transverse strain (r-value, Poisson's ratio), torsion, crack opening, rebar, DIC mapping and post-processing.

How do I mark specimens for a video extensometer?

Use high-contrast dots or lines at the gauge length. Our marking tools and the sample marking guide cover the common methods.

How do I get a quote for the UGC-VE-4209?
