Pneumatic grip for paper, film, rubber and wood tensile tests

The UGC-PG-010 is a general-purpose pneumatic grip for labs that test paper and board, plastic films and sheet, rubber and wood veneers. Compressed air closes the jaws with a constant 3.5 kN (787 lbf) at 7 bar (102 psi), or 5 kN (1,124 lbf) at the 10 bar (145 psi) maximum. Because the force comes from the air supply rather than a hand-tightened screw, every specimen is clamped the same way no matter who loads it, which suits QC departments that run the same test many times a shift.

How it works

A pneumatic cylinder in the anodized aluminum body drives the jaws closed when air is applied. Set the supply pressure and the clamping force follows: lower pressure for soft films and tissue that crush easily, full pressure for stiffer rubber or wood. A pressure regulator makes that adjustment repeatable, and foot pedals or hand switches keep both hands free to align the specimen; both are covered on the pneumatic grip accessories and foot switches page. Each grip weighs 1.3 kg (2.9 lb) without jaws and couples to the machine through a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin.

Jaws and versions

Standard jaws come in two clamping areas, 50 x 50 mm and 50 x 100 mm (height x width), both with a 0–30 mm opening. Choose the surface to suit the material:

  • Blank for smooth, hard specimens that should not be marked

  • Rubber (NBR) for films and paper that tear at serrations

  • Pyramid or wave for rubber, sheet and wood that need more bite

  • Diamond for hard or slippery surfaces

  • V-jaws for round specimens from 4 to 26 mm diameter, with a 50 mm clamping height

For labs that change materials often, the quick-change insert jaw system mounts 50 x 50 mm blank, rubber, pyramid, V or diamond inserts on carriers. Opening with insert jaws is 0–16 mm, and the carriers are ordered separately.

Typical applications

Paper and board strips, plastic film and sheet, rubber and elastomer strips, and wood veneer samples are the core uses. The grip suits specimens for tests such as ASTM D882 on thin plastic sheeting and ASTM D828 on paper. The standard operating range is 0 to 70 °C, with other ranges on request.

Choosing the right setup

With 3.5 kN of clamping force, this grip pairs naturally with low- and mid-capacity frames such as a 5 kN Galdabini benchtop universal testing machine or a Mark-10 F-series motorized tester from our tensile tester range. If your frame uses a different coupling, we supply adapters. Universal Grip's UGC-PG-190 symmetric pneumatic grip also clamps with 3.5 kN at 7 bar, but it closes both jaws about the test axis and opens to 60 mm; the PG-010 is the lighter choice, 1.3 kg against 2.6 kg per grip, for specimens up to 30 mm thick.

Pneumatic Grip 3.5 kN FAQ

What clamping force does the UGC-PG-010 give at shop-air pressure?

3.5 kN (787 lbf) at 7 bar. The grip accepts up to 10 bar, where clamping reaches 5 kN (1,124 lbf).

How thick a specimen can it take?

Up to 30 mm with standard jaws, or 0–16 mm with quick-change insert jaws.

Which jaw surface should I use for paper and film?

Rubber (NBR) jaws are the usual starting point for paper and thin film because they hold without cutting. Move to wave or pyramid jaws if rubber or wood specimens slip.

Are jaws included with the grips?

No. Grips and jaws are ordered separately, and quick-change insert jaws also need carriers.

How does the PG-010 attach to my testing machine?

Through a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin. Other couplings are available on request, and adapters fit most frames.

Can it be used above room temperature?

The standard range is 0 to 70 °C. Other temperature ranges are available on request.
