Miniature pneumatic grip for micro and low-force tensile tests

The UGC-PG-030 is built for the bottom of the force range, where grip weight and hand-tightening variation can distort results. Compressed air closes 15 x 15 mm (0.59 x 0.59 in) hardened steel jaws with 140 N (31.5 lbf) at 7 bar (102 psi). At a friction coefficient of 0.5 that holds roughly 70 N (15.7 lbf) of tensile load, enough for fine films, fibers, thin wires and small medical or electronic components. Each grip weighs 66 g or 80 g without jaws, so very little dead weight hangs on a small load cell.

How it works

A miniature pneumatic piston drives the jaw closed whenever air is applied, so every specimen receives the same clamping force regardless of operator. The single-rod version is the lightest. The two-rod version adds a second piston rod and is the one offered with wider 15 x 50 mm jaws, which come with a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin. The standard coupling is a female clevis for an 8 mm pin, and a 15.9 mm pin is accommodated through an adapter. Air enters through an M3 connection, and a 2 mm tube is supplied with the grip.

Jaws and versions

  • 1 rod: 15 x 15 mm jaws, 66 g per grip

  • 2 rods: 15 x 15 mm jaws, 80 g per grip

  • 2 rods, wide jaws: 15 x 50 mm jaws, female clevis 15.9 mm (5/8 in)

Jaw sets are hardened to 58 HRC and come in blank, rubber-coated and pyramid surfaces. Blank and pyramid jaws open 0–8 mm (0.31 in); rubber-coated jaws open 0–6 mm because the coating takes up space. Grips are supplied without jaws, so you choose the surface for each material.

Typical applications

Thin films and foils, single fibers and fine wires, medical and electronic components, and other micro-force work. The grip suits specimens for tests such as ASTM D3822 on single textile fibers, and narrow film strips of the kind tested to ASTM D882. Standard temperature range is 0 to 70 °C; other ranges are on request.

Choosing between small pneumatic grips

Universal Grip also offers the UGC-PG-160 small lightweight pneumatic grip. The PG-030 is the smaller and lighter of the two, with 15 mm jaws and an 8 mm opening. The PG-160 weighs 240 g, clamps with 200 N, is rated for 100 N tensile and takes jaw faces from 25 x 25 to 25 x 100 mm with up to 20 mm opening. For the test frame, a Mark-10 F-series motorized tester such as the 100 lbF tensile tester matches the 70 N range, and a 2.5 kN Galdabini benchtop testing machine is the smallest universal frame we offer. Foot pedals and micro hand switches are on the pneumatic grip accessories page.

Small Pneumatic Grip 70 N FAQ

How much tensile load can the UGC-PG-030 hold?

About 70 N (15.7 lbf). That figure assumes a friction coefficient of 0.5 against the 140 N clamping force at 7 bar; slippery specimens will hold less.

Why does grip weight matter for low-force tests?

The upper grip hangs on the load cell, so a heavy grip takes up part of a small cell's range. At 66–80 g per grip, the PG-030 leaves nearly all of it for the specimen.

Should I choose the one-rod or two-rod version?

The one-rod grip is the lightest at 66 g. The two-rod version weighs 80 g and is the version offered with wider 15 x 50 mm jaws.

What air connection does it use?

An M3 connection with a 2 mm tube supplied. Foot pedals use 3 mm tube, so an adapter is used to connect them; see pneumatic grip accessories.

Will it fit a machine with a 5/8 in clevis?

Yes. The standard coupling is a female clevis for an 8 mm pin, and a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin is accommodated with an adapter.

Are jaws included?

No. Grips are supplied without jaws; choose blank, rubber-coated or pyramid 15 x 15 mm jaw sets in hardened 58 HRC steel.
