Symmetric Pneumatic Grip 5 kN – 0–60 mm Specimens

Pneumatic grip whose jaws close symmetrically about the test axis: 5 kN max. load, 3.5 kN clamping at 7 bar, specimens 0–60 mm thick.

Brand: Universal Grip  |  Model: UGC-PG-190  |  ● Configured to order

  • Symmetric jaw closing keeps specimens centered on the load axis

  • Specimen thickness 0–60 mm (about 2.4 in) with a 50 mm stroke

  • 5 kN (about 1,125 lbf) maximum load

  • 3.5 kN clamping at 7 bar, up to 8 kN at 16 bar

  • Hardened steel jaws, 58 HRC, in 50 x 50 and 50 x 100 mm sizes

  • Quick-change insert jaws on carriers, including V-inserts for Ø 4–14 mm

Standards: ASTM D3574  ·  ASTM D412  ·  ISO 37

Centered clamping for thick and compressible specimens

In a grip with one fixed jaw, the specimen's centerline moves away from the load axis as specimen thickness grows. On a thin film that offset is negligible; on a thick foam block or a rubber pad it introduces bending. The UGC-PG-190 avoids the problem because both jaws close symmetrically about the test axis, keeping the specimen centered whatever its thickness.

Stroke, opening and force

A 50 mm stroke lets the grip accept specimens from 0 to 60 mm thick (about 2.4 in), or 0–46 mm with insert jaws. The grip carries a maximum load of 5 kN (about 1,125 lbf). At 7 bar it clamps with 3.5 kN (about 790 lbf at roughly 102 psi), and the clamping force can be raised to a maximum of 8 kN at 16 bar (about 1,800 lbf at 232 psi) for specimens that slip. The body is anodized aluminum, the jaws are hardened steel at 58 HRC for long service life, and each grip weighs 2.6 kg (about 5.7 lb) without jaws.

Jaws and versions

  • Solid jaws 50 x 50 mm: smooth, rubber, pyramid, V for Ø 4–30 mm, wave and diamond faces

  • Solid jaws 50 x 100 mm: smooth, rubber, pyramid, wave and diamond faces

  • Insert jaws 50 x 50 mm: smooth, rubber, pyramid, V for Ø 4–14 mm, wave and diamond faces on a carrier set

Solid jaws give the full 0–60 mm range; insert jaws trade some opening for fast face changes when one rig serves several materials.

Typical applications

The grip is used on foams and mineral wool, rubber and elastomers, textiles and webbing, and plastic and composite strips. Specimens like these vary widely in thickness from one batch to the next, which is exactly where symmetric clamping helps.

Machine fit

The coupling is a female clevis for a Ø 15.9 mm (5/8 in) or Ø 20 mm pin, with others on request and adapters available. With a 5 kN maximum load, the grip suits the Mark-10 1,500 lbF tensile tester and the Galdabini 5 kN and 10 kN benchtop universal testing machines. The temperature range is 0 to +70 °C, other ranges on request. Foot pedals, hand switches and a pressure regulator are on the pneumatic grip accessories page.

Send us the specimen material and thickness range, and we will recommend jaws and configure the grips. Request a quote.

Symmetric Pneumatic Grip 5 kN FAQ

What does symmetric jaw motion do?

Both jaws close symmetrically about the test axis, so the specimen stays centered on the load line regardless of its thickness.

How thick can specimens be?

0–60 mm with solid jaws, or 0–46 mm with insert jaws. The grip has a 50 mm stroke.

What is the difference between the 5 kN and 3.5 kN figures?

5 kN is the maximum load. 3.5 kN is the clamping force at 7 bar, which can be raised to a maximum of 8 kN at 16 bar.

Can it test foam?

Yes. Foams and mineral wool are listed applications, and the 60 mm opening accepts thick specimens. See our foam testing page.

Can it hold round specimens?

V-faced solid jaws take round specimens Ø 4–30 mm; V-insert jaws take Ø 4–14 mm.

What are the jaws made of?

Hardened steel at 58 HRC, mounted in an anodized aluminum body.
