Compact pneumatic grip for low-force tensile tests

The UGC-PG-120 is the small member of our universal pneumatic grip family, sized for tensile tests where specimens break at low forces and the mass hanging on the load cell matters. A Ø 50 mm pneumatic piston drives the moving jaw against a counter jaw with 1.2 kN of clamping force at 7 bar, which is about 270 lbf at roughly 102 psi. QC and R&D labs use it on plastic films and foils, textiles and nonwovens, paper and thin board, and fine wires or thin rods.

How it works

Compressed air enters through an M5 internal thread and pushes the piston, which closes the moving jaw. The opposite jaw is a manually adjustable counter jaw: set it once so the clamping line sits where you want it, and each specimen after that is gripped in the same position. Opening is 0–10 mm (about 0.39 in), depending on the jaws fitted. The anodized aluminum body keeps weight down to 1.02 kg per grip with one rod or 1.42 kg with two, both without jaws, leaving more of a small load cell's range for the test itself.

Versions

  • One or two pneumatic rods, each supplied as a pair of grips without jaws

  • Vise-action versions with one or two rods, also supplied as a pair without jaws

We confirm which version fits your specimen and loading routine when we quote.

Jaw options

Solid jaws come with a 30 x 30 mm or 25 x 25 mm face in smooth, rubber, pyramid, V, wave, diamond and line-contact versions. V faces center round specimens such as fine wire, while line-contact faces concentrate the grip along a narrow band. For labs that switch materials often, quick-change insert jaws with 30 x 30 mm faces mount on a carrier set, so changing a face does not mean removing the complete jaw.

Machine fit and accessories

The coupling is a female clevis for a Ø 15.9 mm (5/8 in) or Ø 20 mm pin, with other couplings on request and adapters available. At 1.2 kN clamping, the grip pairs well with Mark-10 F-series motorized tensile testers and with the Galdabini 2.5 kN and 5 kN benchtop universal testing machines. Foot pedals, hand switches and a pressure regulator are listed on the pneumatic grip accessories page. The rated temperature range is 0 to +70 °C, with other ranges on request.

Choosing between our small 1.2 kN grips

We offer several 1.2 kN pneumatic grips. The UGC-PG-120 is the one with a Ø 50 mm piston, a hand-adjustable counter jaw, a 0–10 mm opening and both solid and insert jaws. The UGC-PG-150 opens only 0–5 mm, ships with insert-jaw carriers and weighs 0.56 kg per grip with jaws. The UGC-PG-130 is a single-piston grip whose coupling block takes either common clevis pin size.

Send us your specimen type, machine coupling and air supply and we will configure the grips. Request a quote.

Small Universal Pneumatic Grip 1.2 kN FAQ

How much clamping force does the UGC-PG-120 give?

1.2 kN (about 270 lbf) at 7 bar from its Ø 50 mm piston. Running at lower supply pressure reduces clamping force, which helps with very thin films.

What does the adjustable counter jaw do?

You set the counter jaw by hand so the clamping line sits where you need it. The piston then closes the moving jaw against it the same way for every specimen.

What is the jaw opening?

0–10 mm, depending on the jaws fitted.

Can it grip fine wire or thin rod?

Yes. Fine wires and thin rods are listed applications, and V-faced solid jaws center round specimens. Send us the diameter and expected break force so we can confirm the jaw choice.

What is the difference between the one-rod and two-rod versions?

Both clamp at 1.2 kN at 7 bar; the two-rod grip weighs 1.42 kg versus 1.02 kg per grip without jaws. Vise-action versions are offered with either rod count, and we will recommend one for your specimen.

How does it compare with the UGC-PG-150?

The PG-150 is lighter (0.56 kg per grip with jaws) and opens 0–5 mm with insert jaws on carriers. The PG-120 opens to 10 mm and takes both solid and insert jaws.

How are the grips operated?

Air connects through an M5 thread. Add foot pedals, hand switches or a regulator for hands-free clamping.
