Stereo pair of 5 MPx cameras that measures in 3D and cancels out-of-plane error
The UGC-VE-4105-3D is a non-contact optical (video) extensometer from the X-Sight 4000-3D Series, supplied, configured and supported by Universal Grip. It tracks gauge marks on the specimen with two 5 MPx cameras in one housing and reports strain, total length, delta length and angle in real time, so it can stay on the specimen through break with no knife edges to slip or damage. The stereoscopic camera pair captures spatial movement and deformation, making results resilient to out-of-plane specimen motion and improving accuracy.
Measuring length, accuracy class and sampling rate
Per ISO 9513 the UGC-VE-4105-3D measures 110 mm at Class 0.5, 220 mm at Class 1. Class 0.5 is the tight class labs choose for modulus and proof-strength work; ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture.
Typical sampling is 175 Hz (75 Hz with the full image), and narrowing the view width raises it to 1 kHz. Higher pixel counts trade frame rate for field of view: at this resolution the camera favours a balance of field size and speed.
As a rough sizing check: with an 80 mm ISO 6892-1 A80 gauge length, the Class 1 measuring length of 220 mm lets the gauge marks be followed to about 180% elongation before they leave the calibrated field, assuming the marks start near the centre of the view. We confirm the real limit from your specimen, grips and expected elongation.
What the UGC-VE-4105-3D is best for
metals to ASTM E8/E8M, ASTM A370 and ISO 6892-1, including elevated temperature work to ISO 6892-2
sheet metal r-value and Poisson's ratio with the transverse (TR) module
composites to ASTM D3039 and compression to ASTM D695
Why measure in 3D
A single camera sees only in-plane motion, so a specimen that moves toward or away from the lens reads as false strain. The stereo pair in the 4000-3D housing triangulates every gauge mark in three dimensions, which removes that error for thin sheet, film, composites and parts that twist, bow or slip in the grips. The 3D line-probe module is included.
Choosing the lens and working distance
Measuring length, lens focal length and working distance are linked: choose two and the third follows. For the Class 0.5 field of view (110 mm high by 92 mm wide) the working distances are 16 mm lens 190 mm, 25 mm lens 300 mm, 35 mm lens 440 mm (from the front cover). Longer working distances reduce LED intensity and can need longer shutter times, so tell us your frame and chamber geometry and we will pick the lens.
Connects to your testing machine
Strain is streamed live to the test-machine controller over DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP or RS232, as an analog signal through auxiliary D/A converters, or as an encoder-style quadrature pulse. The JSON and MRT APIs let your test software start and stop measurement, switch methods and set the gauge length. That is how we retrofit video extensometers to Instron, MTS, ZwickRoell, Shimadzu, Test Resources, ADMET and Galdabini frames; see retrofitting a video extensometer to an existing machine.

UGC-VE-4105-3D 5 MPx 3D Stereo Video Extensometer FAQ
What gauge length and field of view does the UGC-VE-4105-3D cover?
Per ISO 9513, Class 0.5: 110 mm; Class 1: 220 mm. The exact field depends on the lens and working distance, which we pick from your specimen and frame.
Which ISO 9513 class do I need?
ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture. Many labs use Class 0.5 for modulus. Plastics methods such as ISO 527 set their own accuracy requirements.
How fast does the UGC-VE-4105-3D sample?
175 Hz typical, 75 Hz with the full image, and up to 1 kHz with a narrowed view width. Data streams to the test machine controller in real time.
Will the UGC-VE-4105-3D work with my existing testing machine?
Yes, in most cases. It outputs DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP, RS232, analog via D/A converters or a quadrature pulse, and the JSON/MRT APIs allow remote start/stop and gauge-length setting. Tell us the make and model of your frame and controller. See retrofitting a video extensometer.
Why choose the 3D version?
Out-of-plane motion (the specimen moving toward or away from the camera) reads as false strain on a 2D extensometer. The stereo camera pair measures each gauge mark in 3D, which removes that error on thin sheet, film, composites and specimens that twist or bow.
What software comes with the UGC-VE-4105-3D?
The axial (AX) module with Point, Line and Extreme Line probes plus the 3D module, on a perpetual license stored on a USB key, with one year of updates and technical support. Optional modules add transverse strain (r-value, Poisson's ratio), torsion, crack opening, rebar, DIC mapping and post-processing.
How do I mark specimens for a video extensometer?
Use high-contrast dots or lines at the gauge length. Our marking tools and the sample marking guide cover the common methods.
How do I get a quote for the UGC-VE-4105-3D?
