ASTM E83 Class B-1 video extensometer with a 400 mm LED for longer specimens
The UGC-VE-4106 is a non-contact optical (video) extensometer from the X-Sight 4000 Series, supplied, configured and supported by Universal Grip. It tracks gauge marks on the specimen with one ASTM-optimized camera and reports strain, total length, delta length and angle in real time, so it can stay on the specimen through break with no knife edges to slip or damage. Optimized for ASTM E83 Class B-1 strain measurement in tensile testing. The longer housing and 400 mm LED illuminate a larger area than the 2000 Series — the better choice for long or high-elongation specimens.
Measuring length, accuracy class and sampling rate
The UGC-VE-4106 is configured to your specimen for ASTM E83 Class B-1: we set the lens and working distance from your gauge length and expected elongation and confirm the measuring length at quote. Class B-1 is a tighter class than the Class B-2 that ASTM E8/E8M and ASTM D638 typically call for, so one device covers yield, modulus and elongation work.
Typical sampling is 200 Hz (60 Hz with the full image), and narrowing the view width raises it to 500 Hz. The ASTM-optimized camera keeps a high typical rate for strain-rate-controlled tests while holding Class B-1 accuracy.
What the UGC-VE-4106 is best for
metals to ASTM E8/E8M and ASTM A370 with 0.5 in or 1 in gauge lengths
plastics to ASTM D638, where modulus depends on extensometer accuracy
reinforcing bar to ASTM A615 and other long ASTM gauge lengths
labs that report to ASTM and want one non-contact device for several gauge lengths
When to choose the 400 mm housing
The 4000 Series uses the same ASTM-optimized camera as the UGC-VE-2106 but a 424 mm housing with a 400 mm, 330 lm LED. The longer light evenly illuminates a larger area, which helps with long or high-elongation specimens, darker or reflective surfaces and viewing through a temperature-chamber window. If your field of view is short, the more compact UGC-VE-2106 is usually enough.
Choosing the lens and working distance
Measuring length, focal length and working distance are linked. The 8 mm (standard) lens covers 8–10 in measuring length at about 9.4–12 in from the front cover. The 12 mm (on request) lens covers 6–9 in measuring length at about 10.6–16.5 in from the front cover. The 12 mm lens must be specified at order. These values are for the ASTM-optimized camera in the 200 mm housing; we confirm them for this configuration at quote.
Connects to your testing machine
Strain is streamed live to the test-machine controller over DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP or RS232, as an analog signal through auxiliary D/A converters, or as an encoder-style quadrature pulse. The JSON and MRT APIs let your test software start and stop measurement, switch methods and set the gauge length. That is how we retrofit video extensometers to Instron, MTS, ZwickRoell, Shimadzu, Test Resources, ADMET and Galdabini frames; see retrofitting a video extensometer to an existing machine.

UGC-VE-4106 ASTM Video Extensometer FAQ
What measuring length does the UGC-VE-4106 cover for ASTM E83 Class B-1?
It is configured to your specimen: we choose the low-distortion lens and working distance from your gauge length and expected elongation and confirm the Class B-1 measuring length on the quote.
Does the UGC-VE-4106 meet ASTM E8 and ASTM D638 extensometer requirements?
It is optimized for ASTM E83 Class B-1, a tighter class than the Class B-2 those methods typically require for yield and modulus. Check your method's current edition and tell us the properties you report so we can confirm the configuration.
How fast does the UGC-VE-4106 sample?
200 Hz typical, 60 Hz with the full image, and up to 500 Hz with a narrowed view width. Data streams to the test machine controller in real time.
Will the UGC-VE-4106 work with my existing testing machine?
Yes, in most cases. It outputs DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP, RS232, analog via D/A converters or a quadrature pulse, and the JSON/MRT APIs allow remote start/stop and gauge-length setting. Tell us the make and model of your frame and controller. See retrofitting a video extensometer.
Should I choose the UGC-VE-4106 or the UGC-VE-2106?
Both use the same camera. The UGC-VE-4106 adds a 400 mm, 330 lm LED that evenly lights a larger area for long or high-elongation specimens and chamber windows. If your field of view is short, the compact <a href="/equipment/ugc-ve-2106-astm-video-extensometer">UGC-VE-2106</a> is usually enough.
What software comes with the UGC-VE-4106?
The axial (AX) module with Point, Line and Extreme Line probes, on a perpetual license stored on a USB key, with one year of updates and technical support. Optional modules add transverse strain (r-value, Poisson's ratio), torsion, crack opening, rebar, DIC mapping and post-processing.
How do I mark specimens for a video extensometer?
Use high-contrast dots or lines at the gauge length. Our marking tools and the sample marking guide cover the common methods.
How do I get a quote for the UGC-VE-4106?
Send your material, test standard, specimen size and gauge length, expected elongation, and your testing machine make/model. Use the Request a Quote button, call 978-882-1480, or download the video extensometer inquiry form.
