Compact 400 N vise grip for films, paper, wires and yarns
The UGC-VG-090 is a small screw vise grip for light specimens that still need a choice of jaw width and face: packaging films and paper, wires and yarns, elastic fabric strips, and small dental and medical parts. The body is anodized aluminum and weighs 60 g (2.1 oz) without jaws, so it adds little to the load train on a low-capacity cell. What sets it apart from a fixed-jaw miniature grip is the range of jaws it accepts, from narrow 10 x 25 mm pads to 10 x 100 mm strips.
Jaws
Jaws are ordered separately and swapped by the user. Heights of 10 mm suit thin strips and film; 25 mm high jaws give more contact for yarns and wires. The faces available are:
Blank and rubber for film and paper that should not be marked or cut
Pyramid, wave and diamond for specimens that need more bite
V-jaws for round specimens
Line-contact jaws with a 5 mm or 6.35 mm radius, which define the gauge length precisely for strip tests
Stainless steel jaws are also available for the stainless grip.
Versions
Standard aluminum: 400 N, 0–8 mm opening, 0 to +130 °C, 60 g
Wide opening: 400 N, 0–46 mm opening, 90 g
Stainless handles: 400 N, -70 to +180 °C
Full AISI 316 stainless: 1,000 N, -80 to +280 °C, 115 g, resistant to salt water and acids
Typical applications
The grip suits specimens for film tests such as ASTM D882, paper strips under ASTM D828 and single-strand yarn tests such as ASTM D2256. Elastic fabric strip tests use the line-contact jaws, and dental and medical components are a further niche.
Choosing a tester
At 400 N the aluminum grip is a good match for a Mark-10 100 lbF tensile tester (about 445 N). The 1,000 N stainless grip pairs with the 300 lbF tester or a 2.5 kN Galdabini benchtop machine. The standard coupling is an M5 internal thread, and a female clevis for a 15.9 mm pin is available via adapter. For the very lightest work the 57 g UGC-VG-070 is rated 100 N.

Small Vise Grip 400 N FAQ
What load is the UGC-VG-090 rated for?
400 N (90 lbf) in aluminum. The full AISI 316 stainless steel version is rated 1,000 N (225 lbf).
How wide a specimen can it take?
Jaws run from 10 x 25 mm up to 10 x 100 mm, plus 25 x 25 and 25 x 50 mm. The wide-opening body takes specimens up to 46 mm thick.
What are line-contact jaws for?
They clamp along a single line (5 mm or 6.35 mm radius), which fixes the gauge length precisely for elastic fabric and other strip tests.
Can it be used at high or low temperatures?
The stainless-handle version covers -70 to +180 °C, and the full stainless version -80 to +280 °C.
What is the coupling?
An M5 internal thread. A female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin is available via adapter.
Are jaws included?
No. Grips are supplied as a pair without jaws; each jaw set contains 4 jaws.
