Screw Action Vise Grip 10-20 kN – Self-Tightening Jaws

Dual-acting screw action grips whose articulating jaws tighten as load rises: 10 kN aluminum or 20 kN steel with 32, 50 or 100 mm openings.

Brand: Universal Grip  |  Model: UGC-VG-080  |  ● Configured to order

  • Articulating jaws self-align and grip harder as tensile load increases

  • Both jaws move, centering symmetrical and asymmetrical specimens on the load axis

  • 10 kN (2,248 lbf) aluminum version: 40 kN clamping at 80 Nm

  • 20 kN (4,496 lbf) steel versions: 80 kN clamping at 160 Nm

  • Steel versions open to 32, 50 or 100 mm (1.26, 1.97 or 3.94 in)

Self-tightening screw action grips, 10 and 20 kN

The UGC-VG-080 is a workhorse screw action grip for plastics and rubber sheet, roofing membranes, adhesive joints, wood, textiles and foams. Its articulating jaws are drawn tighter as the specimen pulls. That means the operator only has to clamp firmly enough to seat the specimen; the test load supplies the rest. Both jaws move, so the grip is dual-acting and keeps the specimen on the load axis even when one face is thicker or coated, as with membranes or lap joints.

Aluminum or steel bodies

The 10 kN grip has an anodized aluminum body, a 32 mm opening and a 0 to +180 °C range, and weighs 2.36 kg (5.2 lb). Its screw builds 40 kN (8,992 lbf) of clamping force at 80 Nm. The 20 kN grips are nickel-plated steel and build 80 kN (17,984 lbf) at 160 Nm:

  • 32 mm opening, 0 to +350 °C, 5.04 kg per grip

  • 32 mm opening with a low-temperature range of -70 to +350 °C

  • 50 mm opening, 5.6 kg per grip

  • 100 mm opening, 6.2 kg per grip

Jaws

Standard jaws come in 40 x 60, 40 x 100 and 60 x 200 mm with blank, rubber, pyramid, V, wave and diamond faces, chosen to suit the material. For labs that switch materials often, quick-change insert jaws in 50 x 60 and 50 x 100 mm sit on carriers so a face can be swapped without removing the grip. Special jaws are made for lap shear specimens, where offset faces keep the bond line on axis, and water-cooled wave jaws for bitumen sheet.

Typical applications

With suitable jaws, the 10 kN version is used for plastic and rubber roof waterproofing sheets to EN 12311-2, EN 12316-2 and EN 12317-2. Adhesive lap shear joints, in tests such as ASTM D1002, wood, textiles and foams are other common jobs. More membrane and adhesive setups are on our adhesives testing page.

Choosing the right setup

The 10 kN grip fits a 10 kN Galdabini benchtop machine; the 20 kN steel grips suit a 25 kN frame and, thanks to their temperature range, work inside environmental chambers. Couplings are a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) or 20 mm pin, with adapters for others. For lighter specimens, the UGC-VG-100 U-form vise grip applies the same principle at 5 kN. The grips come in pairs or as single grips.

Screw Action Vise Grip 10-20 kN FAQ

How does a screw action grip tighten itself?

The jaws are articulated, so tensile pull on the specimen draws them closer together. The harder the test pulls, the harder the jaws grip.

What is the difference between the 10 kN and 20 kN versions?

The 10 kN grip is anodized aluminum with a 32 mm opening, for 0 to +180 °C. The 20 kN grips are nickel-plated steel with 32, 50 or 100 mm openings, for 0 to +350 °C or -70 to +350 °C.

Can it test roofing membranes?

Yes. With suitable jaws, the 10 kN version is used for plastic and rubber roofing sheets to EN 12311-2, EN 12316-2 and EN 12317-2.

Are jaws included?

No. Grips come as a pair without jaws, and you choose the face and size. Insert jaws also need carriers.

Which coupling does it use?

A female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) or 20 mm pin; adapters cover other frames.

Can I run it in a temperature chamber?

The steel versions are rated to +350 °C and are intended for chamber use; see our environmental chambers.
