General-purpose 5 kN vise grip for plastics, textiles and foils
The UGC-VG-130 is a versatile screw action vise grip for the specimens that pass through a typical materials lab: plastics and films, textiles, paper, steel and aluminum foils, and round wires and rods. Its jaws are mounted on socket bearings, so they tilt slightly to sit flat on the specimen and then self-tighten as the test load rises. Because the grip is dual-acting, with both jaws moving, it handles asymmetrical samples as readily as plain strips.
How it works
A screw closes the jaws, and 15 Nm (11 lbf·ft) of torque gives 10 kN (2,248 lbf) of clamping force, double the 5 kN rated load. The socket bearings let each jaw follow small variations in specimen thickness, which spreads pressure evenly and reduces jaw breaks. An optional quick-release lever, which can be retrofitted, speeds up loading when many specimens are run in a row.
Two body heights
Standard: 0–15 mm opening, 2.2 kg (4.9 lb) per pair without jaws
220 mm tall: 0–42 mm opening and 200 mm from jaws to coupling, 3.2 kg (7.1 lb) per pair
The tall body gives clearance for longer specimens and for parts that hang below the jaws. A nickel-coated steel special, rated 10 kN with a 100 mm height, is available on request.
Jaws
All jaws are 30 x 50 mm. Standard faces are blank, rubber, pyramid, V, wave and diamond, and quick-change insert jaws on carriers let you change surface without unbolting anything. V-jaws hold round wires and rods on center.
Typical applications
The grip suits specimens for film tests such as ASTM D882 and 25 or 50 mm fabric strips under ASTM D5035, along with paper, steel and aluminum foils, and round wire. More film and sheet setups are on our plastics testing page.
Machine fit
Pair it with a 5 kN Galdabini benchtop machine or the Mark-10 1,500 lbF tensile tester. The coupling is a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin, and adapters handle other frames. Air-operated versions are under pneumatic grips, and for bulky specimens up to 106 mm thick look at the UGC-VG-100.

Vise Grip 5 kN FAQ
What makes the UGC-VG-130 self-aligning?
Its jaws sit on socket bearings, so they tilt to lie flat on the specimen and then tighten further as load increases.
When should I choose the 220 mm tall version?
When you need more opening (0–42 mm instead of 0–15 mm) or clearance below the jaws; it has 200 mm from jaws to coupling.
What jaw sizes and faces are available?
30 x 50 mm jaws in blank, rubber, pyramid, V, wave and diamond, plus quick-change insert jaws on carriers.
Can it hold round wire?
Yes. V-jaws keep round wires and rods centered on the load axis.
What clamping force does it apply?
10 kN (2,248 lbf) at 15 Nm, twice the 5 kN rated load.
Is there a higher-capacity version?
A nickel-coated steel special rated 10 kN with a 100 mm height is available on request.
