Screw Action Grip 1 kN – 0.75 kg per Pair

Light 1 kN screw action grip with self-tightening articulating jaws and 5 kN clamping at 4 Nm, for films, foils, paper, textiles and thin metal.

Brand: Universal Grip  |  Model: UGC-VG-140  |  ● Configured to order

  • Rated 1 kN (225 lbf); clamping force 5 kN (1,124 lbf) at only 4 Nm

  • 0.75 kg (1.65 lb) per pair, easy on small load cells

  • Dual-acting design keeps asymmetrical specimens centered on the load axis

  • Articulating jaws self-align and self-tighten as load builds

  • 30 x 30 mm jaws in blank, rubber, pyramid, fine pyramid, V, wave and diamond

  • Small 25 x 25 mm jaws and quick-change 30 x 30 mm insert jaws

Standards: ASTM D882  ·  ISO 1924-2

Lightweight 1 kN screw action grip for films and foils

The UGC-VG-140 is a compact screw action grip for low-force tensile tests on plastic films, textiles and yarns, paper and board, metal foil, and thin aluminum and brass. A pair weighs just 0.75 kg (1.65 lb) without jaws, so it suits small load cells where a heavier grip would eat into the measuring range. Like our larger screw action grips, it is dual-acting and self-tightening, but scaled down for specimens that break at a few hundred newtons.

How it works

Articulating jaws close on the specimen when the screw is turned and then draw tighter as the load rises. Only 4 Nm (35 lbf·in) of torque produces 5 kN (1,124 lbf) of clamping force, five times the grip's 1 kN rating, so a light turn by hand is enough. Both jaws move, which keeps asymmetrical or laminated specimens on the load axis and limits bending at the jaw line. Opening is 0–10 mm depending on the jaws fitted.

Jaws

  • Standard 30 x 30 mm: blank, rubber, pyramid, fine pyramid, V, wave and diamond

  • Small 25 x 25 mm: blank, rubber and pyramid

  • Insert jaws 30 x 30 mm: quick-change faces on carriers

  • Tall special: 170 mm high body with rubber-coated V-jaws for round specimens, on request

Fine pyramid jaws give a shallower bite for thin metal foil, rubber faces protect film and paper, and wave jaws suit textiles.

Typical applications

Plastic films and foils, textiles and yarns, paper and board, and thin aluminum and brass are the main jobs. The grip suits specimens for film tests such as ASTM D882 and paper strips under ISO 1924-2. The grips are specified for 0 to +70 °C, depending on the jaws.

Machine fit

A 1 kN grip fits the Mark-10 300 lbF tensile tester (about 1.3 kN) or a 2.5 kN Galdabini benchtop machine. The female clevis takes a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) or 20 mm pin, and adapters cover the rest. If you need more force in a light grip, the UGC-VG-110 small U-form vise grip family goes to 2.5 kN in aluminum. Pneumatic versions are listed under pneumatic grips.

Screw Action Grip 1 kN FAQ

How much clamping force does the UGC-VG-140 give?

5 kN (1,124 lbf) at only 4 Nm of screw torque, five times its 1 kN rating.

How heavy is it?

0.75 kg (1.65 lb) per pair without jaws.

Which jaw should I use for metal foil?

Fine pyramid jaws give a shallower bite suited to thin foil. Rubber jaws are better for film and paper.

Can I change jaw faces quickly?

Yes. Quick-change 30 x 30 mm insert jaws mount on carriers, so faces swap without removing the grip.

What is the maximum jaw opening?

Up to 10 mm, depending on the jaws fitted.

Which tester suits a 1 kN grip?

The Mark-10 300 lbF tensile tester is a good match.
