200 mm vise grip for textiles, geotextiles and foils

The UGC-VG-170 is built for broad specimens that need high, even clamping across their width: woven and nonwoven textiles, geotextiles and geogrids, plastic foils and films, and wood or plastic strips. Its 200 mm (7.9 in) jaws are pressed closed by three screws on each side, so the clamping load is spread along the full jaw instead of concentrated at the center. Rated to 50 kN (11,240 lbf), it covers wide-strip work that would overload lighter fabric grips.

How it works

With the specimen between the jaws, the operator tightens the screws on both sides. At 120 Nm (88.5 lbf·ft) per screw the grip builds up to 100 kN (22,480 lbf) of clamping force, twice the grip's tensile rating. The jaws open from 0 to 40 mm, so thicker nonwovens fit as well as thin foils. The body is anodized aluminum, at 8.5 kg (18.7 lb) per grip without jaws, and is rated 0 to +70 °C with other ranges on request.

Jaws

The jaws are hardened, nickel-plated steel and are ordered separately to match the material:

  • Wave jaws, 40 x 200 mm: for textiles and foils, where a wave profile grips without cutting

  • Pyramid jaws, 40 x 200 mm: for wood and plastic specimens that need a sharper bite

  • Wave jaws, 60 x 200 mm: a taller clamping face for more contact area

Special builds include a wide-opening version (0–44 mm) with serrated 80 x 200 mm jaws, a 300 mm wide version, and a 100 kN stainless steel version for use inside a chamber.

Typical applications

The grip suits 200 mm specimens for wide-width geosynthetic tests such as ISO 10319 and ASTM D4595, as well as geogrid rib tests such as ASTM D6637, woven and nonwoven fabrics, plastic foils, and wood and plastic strips. Related setups are on our textile testing page.

Machine fit

A 50 kN Galdabini benchtop machine matches the rating; a 100 kN frame gives headroom for stronger materials. Coupling is specified on request, and adapters are available. For a 200 mm grip supplied with fixed serrated jaws and an alignment stop, compare the UGC-VG-120; for lighter fabrics, the UGC-VG-010 offers 70 to 200 mm widths.

Textile and Geotextile Vise Grip 50 kN FAQ

Which jaws should I use for geotextiles?

Wave jaws (40 x 200 or 60 x 200 mm) are the usual choice for textiles and geotextiles. Pyramid jaws are meant for wood and plastic strips.

How much clamping force does the UGC-VG-170 produce?

Up to 100 kN (22,480 lbf) at 120 Nm, with three screws on each side.

Does it suit ISO 10319 wide-width tests?

It takes 200 mm wide specimens for tests such as ISO 10319, within its 50 kN rating.

How heavy is each grip?

8.5 kg (18.7 lb) without jaws.

Is there a wider or higher-capacity version?

A 300 mm wide version and a 100 kN stainless steel chamber version are available on request.

How does the UGC-VG-170 attach to the machine?
