Heavy-duty steel vise grips for high-force tensile tests
The UGC-VG-190 is a family of heavy steel vise grips for specimens that are thick, wide or simply very strong: metal plates and strips, conveyor belting, high-strength composites and wide-strip geosynthetics. The base model is rated 100 kN (22,480 lbf), and heavier builds go to 250 and 300 kN. Instead of a self-tightening wedge, these grips rely on large clamping screws torqued hard enough that the specimen cannot slip at full load.
How it works
The clamping screws are tightened with a pneumatic impact wrench. At 1,500 Nm (1,106 lbf·ft) they hold up to 200 kN (44,960 lbf) of clamping force, twice the rating of the 100 kN grip. Using an impact wrench rather than a hand wrench makes this practical for one operator and gives repeatable tightening from specimen to specimen; we recommend one with these grips. The body is nickel-plated steel and the jaws are hardened, with the grips rated 0 to +70 °C.
Configured to the job
Body width, number of screws and coupling adapter are chosen for each application. Typical builds:
100 kN, 100 x 100 mm: specimens 0–16 mm thick
100 kN, 100 x 210 mm: specimens 0–40 mm thick
100 kN, six screws: 6 x M36 screws with 70 x 200 mm jaws
250 kN, 100 x 210 mm: specimens 0–20 mm thick
300 kN: specimens 0–18 mm thick, male clevis coupling
Pyramid jaws come in 100 x 80 mm and 70 x 200 mm. Standard couplings are a female clevis for a 31.8 mm (1-1/4 in) or 40 mm pin, with adapters for others.
Typical applications
Wide-strip geosynthetics, thick metal plates and strips, conveyor belting and high-strength composites are the main uses. Wide geosynthetic specimens for tests such as ISO 10319 fit the wide-body builds, and larger geosynthetic versions for wide-strip tests to GOST 32491 are built on request. See our metals testing page for plate and strip setups.
Machine fit
The 100 kN grips suit a 100 kN Galdabini frame or a floor-standing machine. The 250 and 300 kN builds call for a floor-standing or hydraulic universal testing machine. If your frame tops out near 50 kN, the UGC-VG-200 is a self-tightening steel grip rated 46 kN. Hydraulic clamping alternatives are under hydraulic grips.

Heavy Duty Vise Grip 100 kN FAQ
Why does the UGC-VG-190 need an impact wrench?
The screws must reach 1,500 Nm to give 200 kN of clamping force. A pneumatic impact wrench makes that practical and repeatable.
What capacities are available?
The base grip is rated 100 kN, with heavier builds at 250 kN and 300 kN.
How thick a specimen can it take?
Up to 16, 18, 20 or 40 mm depending on the version; the 100 x 210 mm 100 kN build takes up to 40 mm.
Which couplings are standard?
A female clevis for a 31.8 mm (1-1/4 in) or 40 mm pin; the 300 kN version uses a male clevis. Adapters cover other frames.
Can it test wide geosynthetics?
Yes. The wide-body builds suit geosynthetic strips, and larger versions for GOST 32491 wide-strip tests are made on request.
Are jaws included?
No. Grips are supplied as a pair without jaws; pyramid and wave jaws are ordered separately.
