A wedge grip that clamps without pulling on the specimen
In many wedge grips the jaws travel along the wedge as they close, and that motion can pull on the specimen before the test has started. For a ductile metal strip the effect is small. For technical ceramics or brittle composites, an unintended preload can crack or pre-stress the specimen before the first data point. The UGC-PG-170 is designed to avoid this.
How the non-shift design works
The jaws move horizontally only. The distance between the coupling pin and the jaws stays constant during clamping, so the gauge position does not shift and the axial load on the specimen stays minimal. Clamping is pneumatic: the standard grip develops 22 kN of clamping force at 7 bar (about 4,950 lbf at roughly 102 psi) and 40 kN at 15 bar (about 8,990 lbf at 218 psi), and it carries a tensile load of 10 kN (about 2,250 lbf).
Versions
10 kN standard: 22 kN clamping at 7 bar, 0 to +70 °C
10 kN with pull rods: for use in temperature chambers
20 kN high temperature: -70 to +280 °C, male clevis with Ø 25 mm pin hole
The body is nickel-plated steel, with stainless steel also listed, and each grip weighs 9.7 kg (about 21.4 lb) without jaws.
Jaws
All jaws have a 33 x 40 mm face, and the 0–16 mm total opening is covered in three ranges:
Pyramid jaws for openings of 0–6, 6–12 or 10–16 mm
V-jaws for round specimens Ø 2–6 or 6–12 mm
Diamond jaws for openings of 0–6 mm
Applications and machine fit
Besides technical ceramics and brittle composites, the grip handles wires and round bars as well as flat metal and plastic specimens. Standard couplings are a female clevis for a Ø 15.9 mm (5/8 in) or Ø 20 mm pin, with others on request. Given the grip mass and the 10–20 kN tensile range, it pairs with Galdabini 25 kN and 50 kN benchtop universal testing machines or a floor-standing UTM. For temperature work, combine the pull-rod or high-temperature version with one of our environmental chambers. Foot pedals and hand switches are on the pneumatic grip accessories page.

Pneumatic Non-Shift Wedge Grip 10-20 kN FAQ
What does "non-shift" mean?
The jaws move horizontally only, so the distance between the coupling pin and the jaws stays constant during clamping and the specimen sees minimal axial load before the test starts.
Why use it for ceramics?
Brittle materials such as technical ceramics can be pre-loaded or damaged by jaw travel during clamping. Horizontal-only jaw motion keeps that preload low.
What capacity is it rated for?
The standard grip carries a 10 kN tensile load with 22 kN clamping at 7 bar. A 20 kN version rated -70 to +280 °C is available on request.
What jaw openings are available?
Pyramid jaws cover 0–6, 6–12 and 10–16 mm; V-jaws take round specimens Ø 2–6 or 6–12 mm; diamond jaws cover 0–6 mm. All faces are 33 x 40 mm.
Is there a version for temperature testing?
Yes. Order the version with pull rods for chamber use, and see our environmental chambers.
How heavy are the grips?
9.7 kg per grip without jaws, so allow for that mass when you choose the load cell and machine.
