Pneumatic grips for bitumen sheeting and roofing membranes
Bituminous roofing membranes soften as they warm, and a soft specimen tends to creep out of ordinary jaws during a tensile test. The UGC-PG-180 is a two-rod pneumatic grip built for this material. Its insert jaw carriers have ports for a water cooling circuit, so chilled jaws hold soft bituminous specimens without slipping. It is used for tensile tests on bitumen sheeting and roofing felt such as ASTM D4073 and ASTM D5147, and it also handles waterproofing sheets and soft polymer sheet.
How it works
Two pneumatic rods close the jaws with 7 kN of clamping force at 7 bar (about 1,575 lbf at roughly 102 psi), rising to 16 kN at 16 bar (about 3,600 lbf at 232 psi). Air connects through a 1/8 in port. Each insert jaw carrier has two cooling ports that connect to a circulator, which is quoted separately. The body is anodized aluminum for low weight and corrosion resistance, and each grip weighs 4.5 kg (about 9.9 lb) without jaws.
Insert jaws
All faces are quick-change 65 x 70 mm inserts that mount on the carrier set:
Special wave insert jaws for bitumen, opening 0–14 mm
Smooth insert jaws, opening 0–14 mm
Rubber-faced insert jaws, opening 0–12 mm
Pyramid insert jaws, opening 0–14 mm
Large-opening pyramid jaws, 0–42 mm, supplied with special piston rods
Setting up a bitumen test
For bitumen work, order the carrier set together with the special wave inserts and connect the carriers to a cooling circulator. Because the same carriers take smooth, rubber-faced and pyramid inserts, the grips can also be used on other sheet materials without changing the grip body. For thick or layered membranes, the large-opening pyramid jaws extend the opening to 42 mm.
Machine fit
The coupling is a female clevis for a Ø 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin, with other couplings and adapters on request. The 7–16 kN clamping range suits Galdabini 10 kN and 25 kN benchtop universal testing machines. The rated temperature range is 0 to +70 °C. Foot pedals and hand switches are on the pneumatic grip accessories page, and a compressor can be included in the quote.

Symmetric Pneumatic Grip for Bitumen Sheet FAQ
Why are the jaw carriers water-cooled?
Bitumen softens with temperature. Cooling the carriers lets chilled jaws hold soft bituminous specimens without slipping.
Is the cooling circulator included?
No. Each carrier has two cooling ports; the circulator is quoted separately.
Which tests is the UGC-PG-180 used for?
Tensile tests on bitumen sheeting and roofing felt such as ASTM D4073 and ASTM D5147, plus waterproofing sheets and soft polymer sheet.
What clamping force does it give?
7 kN at 7 bar, rising to 16 kN at 16 bar.
What jaw opening is available?
0–14 mm with standard inserts (0–12 mm with rubber-faced inserts), or 0–42 mm with the large-opening pyramid jaws and special piston rods.
Does it need a different grip for other sheet materials?
No. The same carriers take smooth, rubber-faced and pyramid inserts, so you only change the insert faces.
