A maximum-field 16 MPx video extensometer for geotextiles, rope and long specimens
The UGC-VE-2116 is a non-contact optical (video) extensometer from the X-Sight 2000 Series, supplied, configured and supported by Universal Grip. It tracks gauge marks on the specimen with one 16 MPx camera and reports strain, total length, delta length and angle in real time, so it can stay on the specimen through break with no knife edges to slip or damage. Class 0.5 measuring length of 330 mm suits standard dog-bone and strip specimens.
Measuring length, accuracy class and sampling rate
Per ISO 9513 the UGC-VE-2116 measures 330 mm at Class 0.5, 660 mm at Class 1 and 1320 mm at Class 2. Class 0.5 is the tight class labs choose for modulus and proof-strength work; ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture.
Typical sampling is 70 Hz (23 Hz with the full image), and narrowing the view width raises it to 1 kHz. Higher pixel counts trade frame rate for field of view: at this resolution the camera favours reach and resolution over raw speed.
As a sizing check: the Class 2 measuring length of 1320 mm is long enough to follow a gauge section of about 1.3 m, to measure several gauge lengths on one long specimen, or to watch more than one specimen at once. We confirm the usable field from your specimen, grips and expected elongation.
What the UGC-VE-2116 is best for
wide-width geotextile tests to ASTM D4595 and geogrids
rope, cord and yarn to ASTM D2256 and ASTM D885
rebar and long structural specimens to ASTM A615
large components and several specimens in one field of view
Why a single 200 mm housing
The camera, C-mount lens, 200 mm blue LED (465 nm) and USB light relay are built into one 221 × 187 × 80 mm housing that weighs 1.4 kg. Bolt it to the test frame with two M6 screws on a 165 mm span or put it on a tripod using the 1/4"-20 thread. When your specimens grow, add camera units: the same hardware is the building block of the 2200 and 2300 configurations.
Choosing the lens and working distance
Measuring length, lens focal length and working distance are linked: choose two and the third follows. For the Class 0.5 field of view (330 mm high by 188 mm wide) the working distances are 12 mm lens 262 mm, 16 mm lens 352 mm, 25 mm lens 556 mm, 35 mm lens 782 mm, 50 mm lens 1,122 mm (from the front cover). Longer working distances reduce LED intensity and can need longer shutter times, so tell us your frame and chamber geometry and we will pick the lens.
Connects to your testing machine
Strain is streamed live to the test-machine controller over DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP or RS232, as an analog signal through auxiliary D/A converters, or as an encoder-style quadrature pulse. The JSON and MRT APIs let your test software start and stop measurement, switch methods and set the gauge length. That is how we retrofit video extensometers to Instron, MTS, ZwickRoell, Shimadzu, Test Resources, ADMET and Galdabini frames; see retrofitting a video extensometer to an existing machine.

UGC-VE-2116 16 MPx Single-Camera Video Extensometer FAQ
What gauge length and field of view does the UGC-VE-2116 cover?
Per ISO 9513, Class 0.5: 330 mm; Class 1: 660 mm; Class 2: 1320 mm. The exact field depends on the lens and working distance, which we pick from your specimen and frame.
Which ISO 9513 class do I need?
ISO 6892-1 calls for Class 1 or better for yield and proof strength and allows Class 2 for elongation after fracture. Many labs use Class 0.5 for modulus. Plastics methods such as ISO 527 set their own accuracy requirements.
How fast does the UGC-VE-2116 sample?
70 Hz typical, 23 Hz with the full image, and up to 1 kHz with a narrowed view width. Data streams to the test machine controller in real time.
Will the UGC-VE-2116 work with my existing testing machine?
Yes, in most cases. It outputs DOLI Binary, MODBUS, HP Video, TCP/IP, RS232, analog via D/A converters or a quadrature pulse, and the JSON/MRT APIs allow remote start/stop and gauge-length setting. Tell us the make and model of your frame and controller. See retrofitting a video extensometer.
Can I add cameras to the UGC-VE-2116 later?
Yes. The 2000 Series is stackable: adding units moves you to the 2200 dual-camera or 2300 triple-camera configuration with a joined field of view.
What software comes with the UGC-VE-2116?
The axial (AX) module with Point, Line and Extreme Line probes, on a perpetual license stored on a USB key, with one year of updates and technical support. Optional modules add transverse strain (r-value, Poisson's ratio), torsion, crack opening, rebar, DIC mapping and post-processing.
How do I mark specimens for a video extensometer?
Use high-contrast dots or lines at the gauge length. Our marking tools and the sample marking guide cover the common methods.
How do I get a quote for the UGC-VE-2116?
Send your material, test standard, specimen size and gauge length, expected elongation, and your testing machine make/model. Use the Request a Quote button, call 978-882-1480, or download the video extensometer inquiry form.
