Simple screw grips for thin strips, films and sheet
The UGC-VG-050 is the most basic way to hold a thin flat specimen in a testing machine. A long clamping bar is pulled against the grip body by a thumb screw at each end, trapping the specimen across the bar's length. There are no articulating parts and nothing to adjust, which makes these grips a low-cost option for labs that test plastic and metal strips, films, foils, paper and laminates on a routine basis. Two capacities cover low-force bench work and higher-force tests inside a temperature chamber.
How it works
Slide the specimen between the bar and the body, center it, and tighten both thumb screws. Tightening the two ends in turn keeps the bar parallel, so the clamping pressure stays even across the width of the strip. The jaw opens from 0 to 8 mm (0 to 0.31 in), which covers films, foils and thin sheet. Because the screws are turned by hand, specimen changes take seconds and no wrench is needed at the machine.
Two versions
2 kN (450 lbf): anodized aluminum body for room-temperature tests from 0 to +70 °C. Couples through a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin.
20 kN (4,496 lbf): nickel-plated steel body rated from -40 to +350 °C (-40 to 662 °F), for use in environmental chambers. Coupling is specified on request.
Typical applications
Thin metal and plastic strips, films and foils, paper and laminates, and elevated-temperature chamber tests are the main uses. The 2 kN grip suits specimens for film and sheet tests such as ASTM D882 and ISO 527-3. For hot or cold tests on the same materials, the steel 20 kN grip fits inside our environmental chambers.
Choosing the right grip
The 2 kN version is light enough for a Mark-10 motorized tester such as the 500 lbF tensile tester or a 2.5 kN Galdabini benchtop machine. The 20 kN version belongs on a 25 kN benchtop universal testing machine or larger. Clamping width is specified on request, so tell us your strip width. A plain bar grip does not tighten itself as load rises; if slick or stiff specimens slip, the self-tightening UGC-VG-080 screw action vise grip is the step up.

Screw Grips 2-20 kN FAQ
What is the difference between the 2 kN and 20 kN screw grips?
The 2 kN grip is anodized aluminum for 0 to +70 °C. The 20 kN grip is nickel-plated steel rated from -40 to +350 °C for chamber work.
What specimen thickness fits the screw grips?
The jaw opens from 0 to 8 mm (0 to 0.31 in), so these grips are for thin strips, films and sheet.
Do I need tools to clamp a specimen?
No. Both ends of the clamping bar are tightened with thumb screws by hand.
How wide a specimen will fit?
Clamping width is specified on request. Tell us your strip width when you ask for a quote.
What coupling does it use?
The 2 kN version has a female clevis for a 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin. The 20 kN coupling is set on request, and adapters cover other frames.
Can I use the 20 kN grip in a temperature chamber?
Yes. Its -40 to +350 °C range is intended for use in environmental chambers.
