One pneumatic grip for metals, plastics, wood and textiles

The UGC-PG-140 Pneumatic Lever Grip is aimed at labs with a mixed specimen list: metal sheet and foil one day, plastic or wood strips the next, then textiles, belts and braids. Rather than relying on piston area alone, an internal lever multiplies the piston force, so the grip clamps with 4 kN at 7 bar (about 900 lbf at roughly 102 psi) and up to 10 kN at 16 bar (about 2,250 lbf at 232 psi). That range lets one grip body cover materials that would otherwise call for two different grips.

How the lever mechanism works

Air enters through a 1/8 in internal thread and drives the piston; the lever turns that stroke into a short, strong jaw movement. One jaw moves 7 mm. To handle thicker specimens, exchangeable rods shift the working range: 0–10 mm is standard, and rods for 10–20 mm and 20–30 mm are included. The body is aluminum, each grip weighs 3.2 kg (about 7.1 lb) without jaws, and the coupling is a female clevis for a Ø 15.9 mm (5/8 in) pin.

Jaws and versions

  • 40 x 60 mm solid jaws with smooth, rubber, pyramid, V, wave or diamond faces

  • 40 x 100 mm solid jaws with smooth, rubber, pyramid, wave or diamond faces

  • 60 x 200 mm solid jaws with rubber, pyramid or wave faces for wide specimens

  • Quick-change insert jaws: 50 x 60 mm faces on 60 mm carriers, including a V-insert, and 50 x 100 mm faces on 100 mm carriers

  • Water-cooled wave jaws for bitumen sheeting

Temperature work

The grip body is rated 0 to +70 °C, while the jaws are rated -70 to +180 °C depending on face. If your test runs in an environmental chamber, tell us the temperature range and we will confirm a configuration; other body ranges are available on request.

Choosing a configuration

Start with specimen width: the 40 x 60 mm jaws cover narrow strips, the 40 x 100 mm jaws wider foils and fabrics, and the 60 x 200 mm jaws broad sheet and webbing. Next choose the opening range from the included rods, then the operating pressure. Remember that 4 kN and 10 kN are clamping forces; send us your expected break force and we will check jaw face and pressure against it.

With its 4–10 kN clamping range, the grip fits Galdabini 10 kN and 25 kN benchtop universal testing machines, and the Mark-10 1,500 lbF tensile tester for lighter work. Foot pedals, hand switches and a pressure regulator are on our pneumatic grip accessories page. Tell us your specimens, opening range and air supply, and we will configure and quote the grips.

Pneumatic Lever Grip 4 kN FAQ

How does the lever change the clamping force?

An internal lever amplifies the piston force, so the UGC-PG-140 clamps with 4 kN at 7 bar and up to 10 kN at 16 bar.

What specimen thickness can it take?

0–10 mm as standard. The rods included with the grip extend this to 10–20 mm and 20–30 mm; one jaw moves 7 mm within each range.

Which jaw widths are available?

Solid jaws come 60, 100 or 200 mm wide (40 x 60, 40 x 100 and 60 x 200 mm), and quick-change insert jaws use 60 mm or 100 mm carriers.

Is 4 kN the maximum tensile load?

No, 4 kN (and 10 kN at 16 bar) is clamping force. Holding capacity depends on jaw face and specimen, so send us your expected break force.

Can it be used at low or high temperature?

The jaws are rated -70 to +180 °C depending on face, while the grip body is rated 0 to +70 °C. Other ranges are on request; tell us your chamber setup.

Can it test bitumen sheeting?

Water-cooled wave jaws are available for bitumen sheeting. For a dedicated two-rod bitumen grip with cooled 65 x 70 mm inserts, see the UGC-PG-180.
